How does this work?

The Jewish calendar follows fixed arithmetic rules that determine which day of the week each holiday can fall on. There are exactly 14 possible year types (keviyot / קביעות), each determining the day of the week for every holiday in that year.

Lo ADU — לא אד״ו

Rosh Hashanah never falls on Sunday, Wednesday, or Friday. This prevents Yom Kippur from being adjacent to Shabbos and Hoshana Rabba from falling on Shabbos.

Lo BaDU — לא בד״ו

Pesach never falls on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. This is a mathematical consequence of Lo ADU combined with the structure of the year.

AT BASH — א״ת ב״ש

A mnemonic pairing holidays that always fall on the same day of the week: Tisha B'Av = 1st day Pesach, Shavuos = 2nd day Pesach, Rosh Hashanah = 3rd day Pesach, Simchas Torah = 4th day Pesach, Yom Kippur = 5th day Pesach, Purim (previous) = 6th day Pesach.
